New York City is the largest city in the United States with a population of over 8,100,000. New York City's land area is 305 square miles making it the most densely populated major city in the United States. As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York City. New York City was founded by the Dutch in 1624 as New Amsterdam; in 1664 it was renamed New York by the English. New York City has 50 compelted skyscrapers taller than 656 feet and as of August 2008 had 5,538 highrise buildings. The city has over 28,000 acres of municipal park land and 14 miles of public beaches. New York City consists of five boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Richmond (a.k.a. Staten Island). The city is the location of some of the most famous and iconic landmarks in the world: Central Park, The Empire State Building, Yankee Stadium, the United Nations, Times Square, Broadway, Macy's, Madison Square Garden, Rockefeller Center, as well as numerous museums, including the the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, and thousands of restaurants and other culinary establishments located throughout the city. The city has the largest subway system in the world, which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The city also attracts millions of tourists every year and is probably the most popular tourist spot in the world; in 2010 approximately 48,700,000 people visited the city. An estimated 18,900,000 people live in the New York City Metropolitan Area making it the largest metropolitan area in the United States. The climate is variable with the seasons; it is generally hot and humid in the summer and cold and snowy in the winter. In New York City there is food to satisfy anyone's taste. The city's ethnic diversity is legendary and is an integral part of the city's history. During the latter half of the 19th and early 20th centuries the city served as the major port of entry for immigrants and has always been the home to a large immigrant population.
