My career has focussed on the social, economic, and political complexities of the commons from the perspectives of fishing communities, fish, and managers of the North Atlantic and the Pacific coasts of North America. I prefer talking about "comedies" and "romances" of the commons and about tragedies of the "commoners". Related topics in my writings include cooperatives, fisheries privatization, responses to climate change, and eco-certification. I was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2012 and received the Award of Excellence from the American Fisheries Society in 2013.
