Laid-up on my sofa, I became increasingly frustrated by seeing the housework mount up around me. I felt the need to record it; the feeling that dirt and debris were becoming larger than life and taking over the room. Cleaner required! is my response to the disempowerment I feel when pain and tiredness stop me from doing simple things like tidying up.

This stop-frame animation shows me laying on the sofa reading. I am oblivious to the activity on the floor below me where discarded toys, bits of dropped food and other debris in my lounge are 'coming to life'. The film jumps from one scene to another in short bursts lasting only a few seconds at a time. It gives a lively feel to the film.

A soundscape accompanies the visuals. Rhythms and tropes have been woven from domestic sounds: door slamming, toaster popping, cat meowing. Sometimes the sounds will reflect what is happening on the screen, for example the vacuum cleaner searching for prey. However in the main, they purely set the rhythmic pace for the animation.

There are no vocals in the film but there are captions. The captions have been written to reflect that pace of the soundscape and give insight to what sounds are being heard. The audio description also moves in pace with the film. It relays the key elements of what is seen, but its creative delivery adds to the overall art of the piece. It is rhythmic and choppy and delivered in an almost poetic style.
