"Unfailing Grace" by Enfield. From the Album: "O For That Day"

"For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ."
John 1:16-17

Why is God's grace important? What does "the Law" mean?

God's righteousness = center of the Law, center of the gospel
Righteousness has legal ramifications - God's righteousness=an impossible standard for humans to meet - we are all already guilty because of this
"For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness..." Romans 1:17
The Law (or our laws) reveal God's righteousness and our unrighteousness (we cannot perfectly obey His commandments)
"For in it the righteousness of God is revealed..." Romans 1:17

We are unrighteous, and stand before God (the righteous Judge) as guilty.
"God is a righteous judge..." Psalm 7:11
"...God Himself is judge..." Psalm 50:6

Because of His love for us, "For God so loved the world..." John 3:16
God graciously imputes His own righteousness to us, sinners who were destined to be condemned.
"...God credits righteousness apart from works:
Blessed are those whose lawless deeds have been forgiven and whose sins have been covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will not take into account." Romans 4:6-8

He did this by sending His own Son, Jesus Christ, Who was blameless and perfect (http://net-burst.net/hot/app.htm), to pay the penalty for our sins by dying on a cross and raising Him from the death three days later.

"...not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith..." Philippians 3:9

"Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!" 2 Corinthians 9:15

How sweet the stream, unfailing grace,
That sanctifies my soul.
This steady peace shall never cease
To fill the faithful whole.

So lead me to the banks of life
And let me drink and stay.
And as the deer is panting near
Lord, help me find the way.

What violent waves of timid faith
Sow seeds of doubt and fear.
I call to Christ who takes my hand
He always draws me near.

He leads me to the banks of life
And lets me drink and stay.
And as the deer is panting near
Lord, help me do the same.

Return me to the river deep,
The purest fount I know.
As Glory stands His gentle hands
Shall never let me go.
