The IBM Memory Typewriter was announced March 1974. It was packaged in one set of covers that fit on a desktop, and could be classified as the first IBM "electronic typewriter." It has a 4-Kbyte electronic memory (MOSFET shift register) and a tape loop under the cover which is capable of storing 4000 Character files on fifty tracks. The tape is 1.5 inches wide, and runs at a speed of 12.5 ips, and records at a density of 800 bits per inch (bpi). In 1978 the Memory Typewriter was also available with a tape loop capable of storing 100 tracks.
The tag price of the Memory 50 back in the 70's was around Swiss Franc 16'000.00 in Switzerland, maybe thats one of the reasons why this machine is hard to find nowadays.
