Suddenly I was having heat issues with my laptop. Well, only after having the motherboard replaced of for a different problem: not being able to use media bay battery. After that I noticed something happened to the to the thermal controls because the fan was louder, and I when was using OpenGL the machine would heat up and shut itself down. On the e6420 owner thread on Notebookreview, I read about "spacing" between the heatsink and the GPU as a possible cause. Instead of opening the machine up I tried putting pressure on the keyboard where I figured the GPU would be. il Ouch, see if I (or DELL) can put spacers or extra heatpaste on there to fix this!
--update-- Dell sent in a repair guy who replaced the entire fan unit (thermal paste included), problem solved...
