Eric King from Privacy International, Hauke Gierow from Reporters Without Borders and Marietje Schaake from the European Parliament talk about the importance of creating effective export controls for digital surveillance technologies and making people aware of what is happening.
As Marietje Schaake says, these technologies "can be as effective as weapons", as they are used by totalitarian regimes to target the activists or journalists who try to freely express themselves and share information about the injustices that they suffer under their countries' regimes. The companies that sell these technologies are mainly from Western countries.
