http://pixvid.me/deo Deogratias "Deo" Niyizonkiza, founder of Village Health Works, spoke at a panel during the 2013 Wheelock College International Conference. He discussed various issues with meeting the eight UN Millennium Development goals.

There is a need for more work devoted to giving people access to roads, healthcare, and education. Village Health Works uses a bottom up model to find solutions. They discussed with people who are very ill to discuss what can be done to help them. Though difficult, they can now hear the people who need help and can focus on prioritizing the resources needed to help them out.

Deo was born in Burundi, and eventually went to medical school there. He fled to New York in 1994 after an attack in his hospital while in school. While in New York, he enrolled at Columbia University and eventually attended the Harvard School of Public Health. He moved back to Burundi to establish Village Health Work in 2006.
