What's the best way to make a Descent playthrough tougher? Play the entire mission without any secrets, relying only on what's out in the open. It was a real challenge, but I've done it before (albeit through abusing save points) in Darkflamewolf's "Descent Vignettes," which is at the moment is my favorite Descent mission. I thought the next logical step would be to avoid save scumming too, as well as share the run with some commentary in the form of annotations.

Hotshot is the highest difficulty level I can play Descent 1 comfortably at, so to add extra challenge, this is played on Ace (the next highest rank) all the way through. It's played on D1X-Rebirth, one of two Descent emulators used within the community. Rebirth aims to make the first two Descent games playable on modern computers while maintaining the feel of the original; the other emulator, D2X-XL, has extra features, such as the ability to stockpile cloaking and invulnerability, which can greatly affect the difficulty of the game.

Shown here is the entirety of Level 4, "Dropshaft." There are 25 levels in all; stay tuned for the rest of the playthrough!
