The rocket-ship treehouse control system gets one of its first end-to-end tests. The rocket ship is a 15-foot-high steel and aluminum treehouse with solenoid air valves that control the flow of compressed air into "thrusters" kids can use to pretend they're maneuvering the craft. The control system consists of a series custom-designed printed circuit boards based around the Atmel Atmega328 processor, which (among other functions) monitors the position of a PC joystick, displays the joystick's positions on a series of 7-segment LEDs, and uses the joystick state to assert control lines on power transistors that actuate the solenoids (which, in turn, actuate the air).
