I would highly recommend searching for this video "2002 Chevy Tahoe Front Right Axle Seal How to Replace" posted by another (briansmobile1) as part 1 of 2. It is excellent and he seems very experienced. Then when his video goes black, switch over to my video as part 2 to pick up where he left off on how to reassemble the gears. This will save you if you drop something or they get out of position and you don't remember how they go together.

In my video I state "I think the drivers side is very easy to replace but not sure". I ended up needing to remove the CV axle in order to get the slide hammer in position (through the hub bearing). I really had to slam that hammer about 10 times before it would come free. I have read that the circlip in the inside can wear and make a burr on the shaft making it extremely difficult to remove. I forgot to check for a bur but hopefully this will be the last time it comes out anyway.

One other note: I always grease the inner most surface of a seal which is normally the right thing to do and was recommended by my Haynes manual. However, these goofy seals have an inner race that ***may*** spin with the shaft (Internet people have said it does and also doesn't). I have never seen a seal like this. The axle actually showed a stain mark with the same pattern as the inner lip of the seal (like a diamond imprint). I am now wondering if I should NOT have greased the inner lip since it may cause the inside seal race to slip on the shaft and wear out.... HMMMM..... this job wasn't much fun on the passenger side and I don't want to do it again... if anyone knows if we should or should not grease that seal please reply.

Finally, I have heard that GM seals ($29.99) are way better than the aftermarkets ($9.99). I installed the cheap ones as I only expect to drive about 3500 kms/year...

Update 2 months after installation: both seals were leaking again! Upon closer inspection, I had overfilled the differential by about 1/4" above the bottom of the hole... the fluid was so thick that by the time I saw it running out the hole upon refill, it must have been overfilled. Once I drained the fluid down to the bottom of the fill hole, the passenger side stopped leaking and the drivers side only weeps... I am thinking on hot days, the fluid expands and still comes up too high... my next task is to drive it on a hot day, then pull the plug to drain any excess... then let it go for a while to see if it stops weeping.
