The University Library, in the Robert S. Swanson Learning Center, hosted an open house on Tuesday, Sept. 6, to celebrate the new reference and information commons. This is the first in a series of transitions to accommodate student learning and collaboration at the University Library. The three-year process to transform the first floor Reference Area into an Information Commons was completed in the summer. Changes include a centralized Reference Desk, movable tablet-arm "soft" chair furniture groupings, new study tables providing varied student work space allowing for individual and group study, a wireless access upgrade, improved access to power outlets, computers with campus software in pod-style arrangements, laptop stations, scanners and printers. In response to learner preference of online reference resources, the reference collection was reduced to allow for expansion of collaborative learning areas.
