Compare with my video's from may 5th 2008.
This morning, for the first time in years a trustworthy farrier tried to shoe William, as it is very much desirable to have him shod at his front feet.
After many hours of training, I had a little hope he could succeed , but it turned out to be completely different.
Williams trauma from the past, caused by (no doubt) extreme farrier abuse is still there, in all its very sad aspects.
Without almost full anaesthesia, shoeing William might never be possible.
Although I have done all the trimming myself from the beginning without any real problems, shoeing at the front is really desirable because of fisures in the hoof.
The farrier I choose to give it a try, is highly experienced and very reliable. He was completely informed about the problems I encountered in the past and what might be expected.
Sadly shoeing proved again to be impossible, and we had to give up.

He does not need to be shod as his hooves are strong enough for the little he is used in the forest these days.

Last year a farrier did trim him (also the soles) after professional sedation. Afterwards William was lame for weeks.
The basic problem with hindsight must have been that William has rather thin soles, and he tried to communicate just that to farriers from an early age that trimming his soles was really painfull to him after which he was severely beaten up many times for not standing still and was severely traumatised. I have never handled a horse so afraid for a farrier and when I bought him, I really expected him to be easy and very experienced with the farrier.
He was really experienced, but in the most traumatising way you can ever imagine.
As I never touched his soles ( as I saw no need) he accepted and trusted me completely after a while when he needed trimming.
