You will likely be given a PPD rating from your workers’ compensation doctor once your doctor feels that your medical condition has stabilized and there is little more he can do.

PPD stands for permanent partial disability and it is expressed as a percentage figure - such as “you have a 15% PPD rating to your body as a whole,” or “you have a 10% PPD rating to your right arm.”

As I discuss in this video, a 15% PPD rating to your body as a whole does not mean that you can perform 85% of the activities you did before your accident. Instead, the ratings formula comes from the American Medical Association Guidelines to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment.

The Georgia State Board of Workers Compensation has adopted the use of these guidelines and once you receive your rating, we can calculate a permanent impairment payment based on your workers’ compensation earnings rate and other factors. We can also use your PPD rating in our settlement negotiations or in a mediation.

Finally, if we believe that the treating doctor gave you a PPD rating that is too low, we can send you out for an independent evaluation and another rating and then use this evidence in our negotiations.
