The words of Daybreak were written by the 1916 Proclamation signatory, Joseph Mary Plunkett. The music was written by Sean Nós composer, Lorcán Mac Mathúna, for "1916 - Visionaries and their Words", a collection of songs inspired by the writings of the leaders of The Easter Rising.

"1916 - Visionaries and their Words" was commissioned by 'Arts 2016' the Arts strand of Ireland's national commemorative program of the centenary of The Rising.

The work will be premiered on January 30th 2016 in St. Michan's Church as part of the Temple Bar Trad Fest.
