On July 19, 1942, 72 P-40Fs of the 57th Fighter Group flew off of the Aircraft Carrier Ranger led by CO Frank Mears, with Archie Knight being the last man off. All reached Accra, Gold Coast Africa 100 miles away, losing not one to the sea, all as a result of careful planning and training.
