The Party became popular thanks to a report by Javier Basilio in the Spanish TV program, weekly report. It all started last Wednesday in August 1945, when young men hung out in People's Square to witness the parade of giants and other acts of the party. The boys decided to put a dent in the retinue of a parade with musicians, giants and big heads. The impetus for young people has laid a participant, a prisoner of anger, began to hit everything in its path. By a quirk of fate, there was a vegetable stand which was food for the mob: people started throwing tomatoes at each other until the law enforcement that battle ended vegetable.

The following year, young people took up the altercation and voluntarily took the tomatoes from home. Although the police broke in during the following years, the boys, without knowing it, had made history. La Tomatina was banned in the early 50's, which did not dissuade participants who became even arrested. But the people spoke and the party was again allowed, more participants joining and becoming increasingly frantic.

The party was again canceled until 1957, when, in protest was held and burial of tomato: a demonstration in which the residents carried a coffin with a big tomato inside. The parade was accompanied by a band of music played funeral marches, and his success was complete. Finally allowed the Tomatina and the party was established officially.

The party became popular in the rest of Spain through the story of Javier Basilio, issued in Spanish Television Weekly Report in 1983.

Since then, year by year the number of participants and the enthusiasm for La Tomatina. The success has led to La Tomatina Buñol was declared in 2002 International Tourist Interest by the General Secretariat of Tourism.
