The Nebraska Medical Center's hospital buddies program teams kids who are in the hospital for treatment with UNMC medical students looking forward to a career in pediatric medicine. They meet to do fun activities such as puppet shows or science projects. During this hospital buddies get together, the group made lava lamps out of oil, water and seltzer tablets. For the kids it's a break from the routine of blood tests or scans; for the med students, it's a break from class and a chance to interact with kids on a personal level. The only rule: no white lab coats. The Nebraska Medical Center's child life department organizes the buddies program and says it's a big boost for the kids and a great benefit for the med students.
