I'm trying to do some bayalage highlights on myself! Nothing too dramatic, but I needed to soften my look a little bit :) I used the loreal touch on highlights box in the color creamy caramel

Okay, hi, I'm a licensed cosmetologist as well.  1. "Color doesn't lift color", okay but the kit that she used contains bleach, so I don't know where you're going with that.  2. Color WILL color color, it will NOT lift color.  That is due to the volume of developer that you are using.  If you use a 40 volume (I don't suggest you do), it will lift a little bit.  3. She said to stay the same color, I'm pretty sure she was talking about the brand of color she uses.  And she is correct.  If you find something that works, stick with it.  4. She is giving advice to people that do not want to go to a salon to have a "qualified" person do it.  Before I started doing hair, every single time I had it done in a salon it was screwed up.  I really don't blame her for wanting to save money and heartache.  She likes her result, she looks wonderful, so what's the problem?  She didn't screw it up and her tutorial was pretty much on par with a traditional balayage technique.  Bleach is bleach is bleach, no matter if it comes from a box or the closet at your salon. I don't understand why so many cosmetologists get so jealous of a person's NATURAL ability to do hair without 1500 hours of schooling.  Get over yourself.  Her hair looks great.

+Shannon P thanks! It drives me crazy when someone does their own hair, and a hair dresser acts like they are performing major surgery on themselves. Just crazy bananas. Lol. If someone is comfortable doing their own, I say go for it! It's just hair! It grows back!

+Stacy Wacker I love this response. I've stopped going to salons because I've never been thrilled with how my hair has turned out. Its either been alright but not worth what I paid or just completely terrible. So now I just do my own hair, even cutting it. I'm obviously not an expert, I'd never cut or color anyone else's hair, but I'm definitely an expert on my own hair and I know what works for it. :)

And its not stupid of anyone to come on YouTube and comment that someone is annoying when they don't have to waste time to watch it or comment? It doesn't matter if its YouTube and it happens typically it's still dumb as shit

This actually balyage, all the others you see are ombre balyage.
Katherine Parra
It is a bit different than the professional "v-technique" but it's still a balayage-influenced approach. It still came out great!

A lot of stuff is wrong in this. Changing your color whether you use a box or you go to the salon ... The rules are the same. The reason you can't just color your hair one color and then pick another is because color doesn't color color. I am a hair dresser so saying that you should stay the same color cause you'll be disappointed is wrong. It's possible, you need to learn your levels and tones first. If you're not qualified to do hair you shouldn't be giving advice...'and you should never use box color. Especially ESPECIALLY for highlights .

What a small-minded, desperate, mean-spirited person you are, Chelsea. This is a beautiful, charming girl giving useful, clever tips. A really knowledgable person would be writing a book or something, not shamelessly revealing ones pettiness in You Tube comments. Very embarrassing for you.

The reason she says not to use box dye is because the results are unpredictable seeing as the history of everyone's hair is different. I don't think she's telling you to spend a shit ton of money on your hair either. I'm a cosmetologist and there is an alternative.. Going to a beauty supply store and purchasing bleach with blue tones and 20 volume instead of 40 so your hairs bonds aren't all jacked.

Bayalage is more a triangle shape. Looks like you did regular highlights...

Hi Jamie, I've very much liked and learned from this video of your unique take on Balayage. I'm a lot older than you and know what you mean about disappointments at the salon. I love that I don't need to mess with foil or cotton. Your hair came out great and you are an adorable girl. Don't stray too far from this spontaneous delivery to provide a more "polished" video. Your natural, human presentation is the charm of your videos. All the best!
