The U.S. Embassy supported the Reykjavik University Robotic Submarine Team participating in RoboSub 2011, an international submarine design competition in the U.S. held in July 2011. The team designed an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV).
U.S. Ambassador to Iceland Luis E. Arreaga and Dean of Computer Science Björn Þór Jónsson signed the grant, which supported the travel of twelve instructors and students to the competition. According to Ambassador Arreaga, the U.S. government funded the project for its innovative approach to science and technology and its creative use of social media.
'This project shows the strong partnership between Icelanders and Americans in science and technology as well as international exchange,' Ambassador Arreaga said. He also said that he hopes Icelanders will continue to view the U.S. as a good place to pursue international education.
