This well-known song started out its life as a traditional African-American spiritual that once brought comfort to this country's first farmworkers.
About Zoë Ellis, Crystal Monee Hall, and Valerie Troutt, singers: Zoë is the leader of her own quartet as well as an eight-piece ensemble known as Zadell (Zoë and Dave Ellis) with her older brother, a tenor sax player. You can find her album Zoë Ellis Live at Anna's Jazz Island on iTunes. Crystal was a featured vocalist with the Tony Award-winning musical Rent. Her debut album, River Train, was released last year. Valerie is the featured vocalist in Nicole Klaymoon's Embodiment Project, the lead singer in trumpeter Marcus Cohen's soul orchestra The Congress, and a voice instructor at the East Bay Performing Art Center of Richmond, CA. She is also the director of the Divinity Voice music and art series.
