English Language Learners in the Shaw Middle School summer program worked with volunteers from Gonzaga University to build a traditional Marshallese outrigger sailboat.
Students learned math, science, art, music, navigation, language and many other skills through the process. The group plans to launch the boat in late August.
Thanks to the following individuals for their work on this project:
Scott Franz--Master Boat Builder (all the long, late nights he put into this were purely volunteer and we wouldn't have been able to do any of this without his hard work and wisdom)
Kailey Rice--Photography/Documentary Teacher
Nancy Loomis--Art Teacher
Anny Case--GU Professor who orchestrated this project
Marcy Ray--ELD Teacher
Chris Iglesias--GU Student Helper
Carolina Montufar--GU Student Helper
Gale Snyder--GU Community Volunteer
Plus the students and others from Shaw and SPS who helped make this project happen.
