El virus del Zika es una enfermedad causada por un flavivirus particular.
Se propaga entre las personas principalmente a través de la picadura de
un mosquito de la especie Aedes aegypti; este mosquito también transmite el dengue, la fiebre chikungunya, y la fiebre amarilla. Hay reportes de la transmisión sexual y de la transmisión materno-feta de la madre infectada. La mayoría de la gente con el virus del Zika no tiene
síntomas. Los síntomas más comunes del Zika son fiebre, sarpullido, conjuntivitis (ojos enrojecidos), y dolor en las articulaciones.También dolor muscular, malestar, o dolor de cabeza. Estos síntomas típicamente duran dos a siete dias. Actualmente no hay un tratamiento específico ni una vacuna para prevenir la enfermedad del virus del Zika. Los expertos

EL REPORTE DE LA MICROCEFALIA DEL VIRUS DEL ZIKA Y DEL SINDROME GUILLAIN-BARRÉ DEL 14 DE ABRIL 2016 de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (World Health Organization) declara que, “Basado en un conjunto de investigaciones en desarrollo, hay consenso científico que el virus del Zika causa la microcefalia, el síndrome Guillain-Barré, y otras deformidades fetales del sistema
nervioso central.” Cita estos tres estudios 12, 13, 14.

Zika is a disease caused by a particular flavivirus. The virus is primarily transmitted to people through the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito which also transmits dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever. There are reports of sexual transmission and transmission by an infected mother to her foetus.. Most people with Zika virus disease have no symptoms. Others can have fever, skin rash, conjunctivitis (red or pink eye), and joint pain. Some also report muscle pain, malaise or headache. These symptoms normally last for two to seven days. There is currently no specific treatment for or vaccine to protect from Zika virus disease. Experts and researchers are still trying to better understand this disease and its complications. Much remains unknown.

The World Health Organization (WHO) ZIKA VIRUS MICROCEPHALY AND GUILLAIN-BARRÉ SYNDROME SITUATION REPORT 14 APRIL 2016 states, “Based on a growing body of research, there is scientific consensus that Zika virus is a cause of microcephaly, Guillain-Barré syndrome and other central nervous system fetal malformations.” And it cites these three studies 12, 13, 14.
