A rap by two Antioch University New England students for a Tom Wessels ecological dynamics of landscapes class.

I wake up early throw my boots on tight
Roll out to my forested sight
Got a compass and flag gonna do it up right
Cause I just can’t wait to measure at breast height

Stone walls full of itty bitty rocks
Plow terraces around the blocks
If you know how to listen these things could talk
About the disturbance history that I concoct

My bearings mad accurate as are my paces
I give ya 40 meters any forest many places
Check the hand I’s dealt my teammates all aces
We’ll sample any plot, hey yo, that’s what she says

We specialize in recognizing forested communities
The ground beneath our feet to the make up of the canopys
I am you see a fan of each and every forest family
And damned I’ll be if there’s a site where I can’t read the history

My labels not Armani, it’s EMS
2 base layers and a soft shell vest
I bomb fresh like my man Tom Wes
Got my style correct like my group data sets
I’m going, going, back back to sample, man I don’t think so

An hour in the woods I get the whole thing done
Cause you can count on me like a growth ring son
Prisms I’m using ‘em, hypothesis proving ‘em.
I caught you looking at my middle synusium
The logic flows like the Keene Square fountain
Rhymes drop hard like the man on the mountain

The data we collected from the sample sites selected
Show the differences reflected in a numerical perspective
Quantitative, qualitative, all of it was collated
Calculations lead to conclusions being validated

I can ID a tree in the dark in the dead of winter
By the characteristics of the bark and how it splinters
I’ll age any tree that displays coppiced growth
Take the average of the area, the square root and so forth

Now does anybody have any questions or comments on anything we’ve just seen?
Anybody? Anything?
Yes, Andy

Hey you we handle communities with ample examples
That flatten your theories like fresh plant samples
I’m resilient as serotinous cones
Hot raps leaving basal scars on microphones
I own, just check the uphill zone
I’m known to raise hell like diseased beech _________?

I’ve seen evidence, of what!? Of the last ipsithermal
Recorded in the landscape, natures own journal
Sand dunes and clays remnants of Lake Asheulot
If I wasn’t so active… I’d sure weigh a lot.
