Had the idea for this in 1974, two years later over subs at Maria D's I told Richard Geiwitz and Mark Redfield during one of our legendary blue-skying sessions.
Richard had the Stooges short in an 8mm print and Mark had some newsreel Kennedy footage also on 8mm. A week or two later we were re-shooting the 8mm clips on a front-screen projection rig (used for stop motion animation) into the trusty 16mm Bolex (you couldn't really do decent sound in 8mm). This gave it that gritty newsreel look and a matching look to the footage from different sources.
I got busy at Brenner Cine Sound (cut the darn thing on a Moviola Viewer) and the rest, as they say, is history as it might have been.
