Santa Barbara City College is working to integrate study across campus to incorporate ecological literacy into the various disciplines and generate new programs that provide relevant training. The emergence of the new green economy creates both opportunity and challenge as we try to determine what is really "green" and what falls short as "green washing." Community Colleges have the ability to quickly generate training programs that can create a workforce for green careers, but there is a need to critically analyze basic assumptions and anticipate what jobs will be needed in the future. Community Colleges also have the responsibility to educate by example and can expand the walls of the classroom to include campus operations where sustainable design simultaneously teaches and improves the campus. This talk will use renewable energy to present the challenges and opportunities we have as community colleges.
