The sun was shining and the weather was beautiful, but more than three dozen high school students chose to spend a week of their summer vacations indoors, to learn about breast cancer. The students, many of whom have relatives and friends who have been touched by breast cancer, went to the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) to study genetics, cell biology, treatment options and other important facts about a disease that is estimated to strike one in every nine women in the United States. The young men and women also learned about health professions related to cancer research and treatment. High school teachers from New Jersey also spent a week at CINJ getting valuable tips from Rutgers experts on how they can integrate lessons about breast cancer into their science curriculum.
