We flew into the tiny Hoedspruit Airport and were transferred literally across the street to the Kapama River Lodge located in the Kapama Private Game Reserve. This location offered spa facilities, an infinity swimming pool overlooking a watering hole, and nyala, monkeys and other animals along the walkway to our rooms. On our game drive that evening we observed many animals. Just before sunset we pulled into a herd of cape buffalo who walked all around us. When the sun went down our spotter pulled out his spot light and we found the elusive bush baby. Later we found a male and female lion taking a nap by a watering hole and a rare sighting of an aardvark.

Each game drive seemed to get better. We headed out early the next morning to find an amazing sight. We could hear the cracking and breaking of brush and trees ahead of us. Then the herd of elephants came into view, they just kept on marching parting just enough to go around our land cruisers. Amazing experience! We continued on and saw hippos, rhinos, and more beautiful birds.

That afternoon the rains came in so our drive took us to several site inspections of different lodges. It was getting dark as we left the last site and we had to put on our ponchos because of the rain. We were driving down the dirt road on our way back to our lodge trying to keep ourselves and camera gear dry when all of the sudden the driver stopped. He said he saw an impala jumping across the road and was afraid there may be others behind him. But, to our surprise, two lionesses ran into the road ahead of us and startled by our head lights, stopped, and started looking around. We grabbed our cameras trying to cover them from the rain and started taking pictures. Being dark, we did not know if any of them would come out. Luckily I was able to salvage a few of them. Another amazing sight!
