My friend Michael's daughter found Leo abandoned in Central Park. A park worker told her that Leo was the only one still surviving from his litter, which had been dumped. Michael knew he'd be paying a couple of hundred dollars to buy Leo a great cage, but Leo subsequently had health problems, multiple trips to the vet, medications, and was left with a lingering balance problem. Here, he tips over at about :30 seconds in. Michael agreed, at more than $1,000 total, it was a "ridiculous" cost to care for Leo but he wanted to demonstrate to his daughter how important it is to be loyal and follow through on our commitments to animals. I wrote about the difficult emotional calculus of pet care in my Juggle Sunday column. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001...
