I haven't seen a clear video explanation of how AV works in the context of the UK system. So in my tribute to Google's instructional videos for their services I have made my own attempt to explain...

Update April 2015 - In retrospect I wish that the powers that be had proposed the Single Transferrable Vote - this is essentially the same as AV except that only 1 round of vote transfer is done if the first round fails to produce a clear winner. In the 2nd round the candidate with most votes wins. In most studies of real voting under AV it is resolved in the 2nd round anyway so need to confuse with further hypothetical rounds. It also allows an easy explanation - you're first vote is your heart vote - who do you really want to be your candidate. The 2nd vote is your head vote (the same as a FPTP vote). If 1 is also 2 you don't bother with a 2. It also has the benefit of being used in this country for Mayors and Police Commissioners - so why not MPs?

It also allows the population to express their "true feelings" - there is nothing worse than lending your vote reluctantly to a candidate tactically to find him/her pronouncing he has a clear mandate from the people.....
