This video demonstrates Batphone, an iPhone app which does Indoor Localization using the Acoustic Background Spectrum. This was a research project at Northwestern University and University of Michigan. More details are in a technical paper published at the MobiSys 2011 conference.
The device is able to determine its location within a building by simply "listening" to the ambient sound. In the app, the number "1" entry in the list is the estimate of the current location. You can see that, as we move around, the app correctly recognizes each location within a few seconds.
