The KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme was founded 25 years ago as a partnership between the University of Oxford and the Wellcome Trust in the United Kingdom and the Kenya Medical Research Institute. Originally a small project researching malaria on the Kenyan coast, it is now one of the largest health research institutions in Africa, researching all the causes of ill health in Kenya.

As well as producing high-quality research relevant to national health, the programme also aims to develop research capacity in Kenya and East Africa. This three-part film outlines the organisation’s plan to develop a new generation of African research leaders.

The film was shot before a ruling in a court case earlier this year which found in favour of six of the programme’s former employees who claimed their careers had been held back by “institutional racism”.

Part 1 outlines the programme’s history and aims.

Part 2 examines the methods it uses to encourage young Kenyans to embark on a research career.

Part 3 explains how it supports PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.
