This video is dedicated to Paul Splan of Fresno. Paul died on October 25, 2007, while taking off in his ultralight.
Paul was a renowned hang glider, and ultralight pilot, with over 30 years experience.
I first met Paul on March 28, 1976. I had just soared for a few minutes in my Pacific Gull Ha-19, at the hills of Kettleman City. I had my first lessons here, from Monarch Sky Sails in Fresno.
Paul was giving lessons here, and watching me soar. I made a crosswind landing in front of Paul, and the class.
Paul advised the class as to how this was not the proper direction in which to land a hang glider. I was just a beginner, so a little embarrassing!
He then quickly dismissed the class, since it was now soarable!
To Allison Splan Lloyd, I hope this video brings you memories, and shows you how much your dad was loved. I was honored to be able to make this video of him.
The song is Satisfied Soul, by Musicshake. I thought it fit Paul perfectly.
