Senator Mike Grimm was interviewed by ABC's Diana Williams Sunday, October 23, 2011. The Senator calls Occupy Wall Street anti-American. He says that taxing millionaires engages in class warfare and It attacks those who work hard and try to get ahead. "So if someone has worked their entire life and has become successful, should we be demonizing them? When you look at Wall Street, for example, and you can talk about excesses and you can talk about this and that: Wall Street, I know for a fact 'cause I have a lot of friends who have worked there over the years, do more philanthropic events for charities and the poor than just about any other industry other than real estate." Q. Occupy Wall Street, some of those folks have been outside your offices, I believe, in Brooklyn. What do you make of that movement? "I think it is 100% anti-American, I really do. I think when you take... I've listened to some of the interviews of those that are at some of these groups...and I hear that almost anyone that is successful is the problem. That they want equality for employment and wages. Regardless of whether you work hard or don't work hard we should be equal. I totally disagree with that. I think that is absolutely fundamental to Capitalism and to the way of life here in the United States. If you're not willing to earn it why should you have the same benefits as someone that is, or someone that's willing to work hard? That's what America's founded on. And I really do believe that these come out of Communist and Marxist ideas that are just anti-American." Q. What do you think's going to happen with this movement? "...What it is doing for sure is it's undermining our society as a whole in the sense that we're pitting Americans against Americans. Nobody wins. ...I certainly don't think that demonizing those that are trying to be successful is the answer."
