German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited an Air Force base in Noervenich, North Rhine-Westphalia, on Monday on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the facility's opening.
Merkel was guided around the base by Air Force officers before making a statement to the press. The German chancellor acknowledged the Bundeswehr’s importance to "national security" in her speech.
SOT, Angela Merkel, German Chancellor (German): "We should acknowledge that the Bundewehr with its different specialist groups and weaponary groups, ensures that we live safely in Germany but also guarantees security abroad. And of course the Air Force is an important part of our capabilities which have to tackle various important tasks beyond Germany. You know now that the air forces are deployed in the anti-IS campaign from Turkey as well as that high technological knowledge is necessary for our soldiers."
