All chemicals around us must be assessed for safety. This is usually done by animal testing ('in vivo'), but the advances in the life sciences now open the door for a revolution in chemical safety assessment: modern testing methods will rely on cells and computer modeling. SEURAT-1 is a major European research initiative that is working towards the replacement of 'in vivo' chemical safety assessment. The scientists use the concept of „toxicity pathways“ for the development of new test methods.
