EM: So hello and welcome again to Confidence, Collaboration and Growth. The podcast today, I am absolutely delighted to have my friend and my colleague, my speaker buddy, Cathy O’Dowd. Now I’m known for confidence, I work around confidence and resilience, but I have to tell you, I’ve never climbed a mountain in my life. This lady on the other hand is a professional mountaineer and a fantastic speaker and I’d love you to listen to her. Cathy, will you tell people how on earth you became a mountaineer?
CO: Well it’s in no sense the expected journey. I’m known for being the first woman in the world to climb Everest from both sides so people assume that means I was this tiny tot with this vision, Everest, this was going to be my life’s work. It wasn’t like that at all. I didn’t see snow until I was 11 in South Africa. My father took me to Europe and I was like, “Ew, this stuff is cold.” Then I was afraid of heights as a teenager. I wasn’t that keen on glass-faced lifts and things. I was terrible at sport at school. I can’t connect with a ball. I was the little nerd who was always trying to get out of sports so she could go and hide in a corner of the library...
