It's a small fish and, to be frank, not the tastiest item ever eaten. But it serves a function far beyond its status as a historical icon, lobster bait or human food. The alewife is one of the many underpinnings of the marine ecological web that we know so little about yet have so deeply altered. All hail the mighty little fish!
