A ground-breaking baseball league is coming to DeKalb County for kids who struggle with team sports but don't fit in with most challenger leagues.

"It's important for any kid to play sports as they're growing up, and I've always hated the fact that there wasn't a forum for Jackson to play," said Adam Wickley, the director of Murphey-Candler's new Frontier League.

Jackson Wickley, 10, has ADHD and some speech delays, so his doctors have discouraged him from playing team sports.

He's watched his two younger brothers play with dad as their coach.

"It finally occurred to us: why don't we create a league for him here at Murphey-Cander, where we're family for kids like Jackson?" Adam Wickely said. "That's what we've done."

The Frontier League is designed for kids Wickley describes as having "mild life challenges," like ADD, ADHD and Dyslexia.

"What are you looking forward to the most?" 11Alive's Jennifer Leslie asked Jackson.

"I want our team to win, but that's mostly not what we're thinking about," Jackson said. "We're mostly about having fun with others and meeting others."

Registration started two weeks ago, and already two of the four teams for fall are filled.

This season, dad will get to coach Jackson.

"We'll spend a lot of time on fundamentals and real play," Wickley said. "But at the same time, we'll make it a lot of fun with low stress."

To Qualify, a player must be diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, Appraxia, Auditory Processing, Speech delays, Dyslexia, and Other Executive or Sensory Challenges.

Other challenges can be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Games will start in mid-August for 10 weeks (except Labor Day weekend).

Here are more details:

One-day per week commitment, likely on Saturday mornings.

Practices will be for one hour, then a shorter 4 inning game.

All counties are welcome.

There will be two age Groups: Frontier I will be be for 7-to-9 year-olds, Frontier II will be for 10-to-12 year-olds.
