A few summers ago, my family made a movie. It was an English project for my younger son, Dylan. That summer, the kids had to read To Kill A Mockingbird and do some kind of project. There were many choices; one was to make a "video" of a scene in the book— but the student was required to be IN it, so that meant someone else needed to film it. I decided that if I was going to "film a video" I might as well make it an occasion to "make a movie".
So, Dylan wrote a screenplay from the scene in the book where Atticus shoots the mad dog. I made a director's script, a story board, got actors, costumes and props; we rigged up a makeshift steadi- cam with a pipe and some iron weight discs, shot each scene from several angles— the whole shooting match. The filming took place on a couple of mighty hot, bright days. Hope you like it.
