The US Copyright office recently ruled that it would not allow Americans to chose how they use devices and media files that they bought, even when these uses do not infringe on copyrights. These are simple choices like allowing a person to unlock a cell phone he or she legally purchased to switch it to a new network provider, or taking a DVD he or she legally purchased to rip the file so they can watch it on their iPad. Over 65,000 people and growing have already petitioned the White House on the cell phone unlocking issue and groups like Public Knowledge have already suggested language that would allow for this fix.
