Vernon duly bought a Grundig recorder while Elvis was on maneuvers, and several tapes were recorded. "I Asked The Lord" introduced by a snatch of "Jingle Bells" was a minor standart. There had been versions by Kate Smith, George Beverly Shea, and others, but it was probably Mahalia Jackson's recording that Elvis remembered.
