The history of Black Seal Rum® and the Gosling family began long ago. In the spring of 1806 James Gosling, the oldest son of William Gosling, wine and spirits merchant, set out from England on the ship, Mercury, with £10,000 of merchandise, bound for America.

After ninety-one desperate days on a becalmed sea their charter ran out, and they put in at the nearest port, St. George's, Bermuda. Rather than pressing on for America, James opened a shop on the King's Parade, St. George's in December 1806.

In 1824 James returned to England and his brother Ambrose rented a shop on Front Street in the new Capitol of Hamilton for £25 a year. The Gosling's have maintained a store at this location for 127 years. In 1857 the firm was renamed Gosling Brothers by Ambrose's sons. Three years later the first oak barrels of rum distillate arrived in Bermuda. Three years later, after much trial and error, the distinctive Bermuda black rum destined to be Black Seal was formulated and offered for sale. They didn't call it Black Seal at first. In fact, up until the First World War it was only sold from the barrel, and most folks brought in their own bottles for a "fill up". Eventually the black rum was sold in champagne bottles, reclaimed from the British Officer's Mess, and the corks sealed with black sealing wax.

Bermuda has produced, or been home, to actors such as Earl Cameron, Diana Dill, and most famously, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Dance and music are important in Bermuda. Music and dramatic festivals bring in some of the best R&B, Soca and Reggae singers, jazz musicians, dance troupes and period performers. The dances of the colourful Gombey Dancers, seen at many local events, are wild and fun as they move to the rhythm. Noted musicians from Bermuda have included local icons The Talbot Brothers, who performed for many decades in both Bermuda and the United States (and appeared on Ed Sullivan's televised variety show), jazz pianist Lance Hayward, pop singer Heather Nova and more recently Collie Buddz.
203 year-old Gosling's Rum of Bermuda has joined with 127 year-old Polar Beverages of Massachusetts to create, package and distribute what both are calling the definitive ginger beer soft drink.

Gosling's Stormy Ginger Beer, its official name, took well over a year to formulate and perfect.

"We needed to hit the perfect balance between sweetness and spiciness," explained Malcolm Gosling, 7th generation President of the renowned rum maker, Gosling's Export (Bermuda) Limited. "Our objective was to create a ginger beer that, when paired with our award winning Black Seal Rum, would produce the absolute perfect Dark 'n Stormy®."

The Dark 'n Stormy, a drink of ginger beer and Black Seal Rum, is Bermuda's official national cocktail and has become wildly popular in the U.S., though also frequently mis-mixed due to confusion over which ginger beer to use. "Gosling's Stormy Ginger Beer is the product we recommend for the ultimate Dark 'n Stormy," Gosling adds.

Available in 12-ounce cans to begin with, Gosling's Ginger Beer is a refreshing, zesty soft drink by itself, as well as the perfect mate to Gosling's Black Seal Rum.

As Ralph Crowley, Polar's CEO summed it up, "Neither we nor Gosling's would ever put our family name on anything but an exceptional product. This is one very exceptional ginger beer."
