The Coconut Grove Children's Mosaic community project is a marine-themed mosaic mural that will be installed on the right-hand section of the west and adjoining southwest walls of the US Post Office - Coconut Grove Station, located at the corner of McDonald Street and Grand Avenue in the Village of Coconut Grove, Miami, Florida. The CGCM marine theme is an acknowledgement of our proximity to our beautiful Biscayne Bay and its diversity of marine life as realistically and imaginatively depicted by some of our young artists.

From the very beginning, one of the primary goals has been to have children and youth participate as much as feasible in the creation and production of the mosaic mural. Consequently, the mural design takes its major elements directly from original children's paintings and drawings gathered from Coconut Grove Cares/ Barnyard Community Center, Shake-A-Leg Miami, Blu Moon Studio of Art, and other young contributors.

Production of the mural is being done by the collaborative team of local artists Cyndy Hill (mosaicist, project architect, lead artist) and Eileen Seitz (award-winning painter, project co-producer, spirit). The earliest fruit of this collaboration (by Eileen's hand and using Cyndy's concept) appears in the watercolor painting, "Layers of Love", which serves as the basic working design for the mural.

In addition to those organizations mentioned earlier, we also plan to be working with children and youth from Coconut Grove Elementary School, Coral Gables High School, Ponce de Leon Middle School, and Coconut Grove Sailing Club, as well as inviting additional local artists and community members to participate in workshops over the next couple months.

We envision a "community of participants" adopting and assembling an "element" (fish, plant, etc.) in their homes or studios, taking pictures of themselves with their element for posterity and uploading to the CGCM Facebook page, returning the completed element to the CGCM team for installation onto larger panels, and in the future saying to their family and friends, "Yes! This is the "element/fish" we did for the community mosaic!" We hope that participants and observers alike will find that these colorful and fun artistic expressions allow them a greater appreciation of our unique marine environment and, just as importantly, each other.

The essence of this project isn't only about making a pretty picture on a long overlooked wall of Coconut Grove. It's about bringing the hearts and hands of diverse members of the community - artists, non-artists, young, not-so-young, and even those who are just curious and willing to lend a hand, all together in an effort to put more visible heart into our community, our Village of Coconut Grove.

The Coconut Grove Children's Mosaic group of participants is not an entity, but simply caring people who have come together for the sole purpose of creating this community mural. All guidance, management, labor, space, supplies, funding, time, talent, etc. are given in one form or another. We are sincerely thankful to those who have come forward to date for their hard work, donations and support, and look forward to having fun working with future participants on this worthy community endeavor.
