On this day two years ago, the #Occupy movement began. It was to become a worldwide movement that would inspire hundreds of thousands into the streets, united in the belief that Our Current System Was Not Working.
The grievances expressed were as diverse as the Occupiers themselves; visible on the many signs they proudly displayed. My personal favorite was not a grievance. Appearing in the video above at 14:16, it read simply: "A Better World Is Possible".
For many, including myself, this was the vision that galvanized our support and compelled us out of our homes and away from our routines; to risk being criticized and laughed at and possibly even targeted by the numberless individuals who Did Not Approve.
With no distinctive leadership or foundational principles, and no means of acquiring them, the Occupy movement floundered and fractured and is now regarded by many as a failure.
But I don't think it was a failure, and I continue to work tirelessly in service of this vision and the creation of a better world, strengthened in the knowledge that I Am Not Alone.
