The largest hotspring in the world "Frying Pan Lake" started as a massive crater blown out during the 1886 rift erption of the rhyolitic lava domes, Mount Tarawera. Over many years a hydrothermal system was created and as a result the lake is a boiling radiator for the volcanic area releasing alot steam and gases caused by the shallow magma. Dancing fumeroles and mats of blue/green thermophillic algae line the ever changing hypnotic spring.
