NASA documentary about the selection of the original seven astronauts for America's Project Mercury manned space program. The astronauts chosen were Lieutenant Malcolm S. (Scott) Carpenter, Captain Leroy G. (Gordon) Cooper, Lieutenant Colonel John H. Glenn, Captain Virgil I. (Gus) Grissom, Lieutenant Commander Walter M. Schirra, Lieutenant Commander Alan Shepard, and Captain Donald K. (Deke) Slayton. Unfortunately Captain Slayton was unable to complete his scheduled spaceflight due to medical issues.

The film shows the astronaut selection criteria and process, training programs, testing of the Mercury capsules, and launches (and failures) of the rockets that would be used to deliver the Mercury capsules to space.
