SCRIBBLE

I scribble
on the back of a menu
on a stolen napkin
on a wrinkle in an abandoned place mat
on a faded flier from a reading in Escondido

I scribble
with a pen that won't write
with a tube of toothpaste
on a cracked mirror
in a roadside motel on Route 66
on the way to San Diego

I scribble
his name
over and over
in the childish notebook
I kept in a drawer in my mother's house
She never threw anything away

I scribble
a confession
I stole sugar cubes
I ate too many donuts
I loved too much, too hard

I scribble
I scratch
at the surface
the earth, dry like an ancient tablet
I keep writing on
