Gunman in delivery man garb kills 4 kids, parents.
SPRING, Texas (AP) - Officials say a gunman dressed as a parcel delivery man forced his way into his sister-in-law's suburban Houston home and shot her dead, along with her husband and four of their children.
Harris County Sheriff's Office says Ronald Lee Haskell has been charged with multiple counts of capital murder in the killings Wednesday evening. The 33-year-old Haskell is also accused of critically wounding a 15-year-old girl.
Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Ron Hickman says Haskell is married to the sister of the woman who was killed.
The sheriff's office said in a statement Thursday that Haskell demanded to know the whereabouts of his estranged wife. He held several children at gunpoint until more family members arrived home. He then shot six of them, five fatally.
He will be arraigned Friday.
UPDATE: Standoff ends, suspect in Texas mass shooting taken into custody
4 children, 2 adults killed in shooting at suburban Houston home.
SPRING, TX (RNN) - A three-hour standoff in Texas has ended and a suspect who allegedly shot seven people has surrendered.
The Harris County Sheriff's Department says the man shot his victims at a home in Spring, TX. Five died on scene and another person died at the hospital. Among the dead are four children.
A 15-year-old girl is in critical condition at an area hospital. Despite her injuries, police say she provided key information about the gunman.
"She was able to provide us the name of the person who shot them, where he was going next .. and we caught him going up to that residence where other members of that family lived, we assume he was going to shoot them," said Constable Ron Hickman with Harris County Constable's Office.
Police say they stationed deputies on the street where they believed he was heading. The suspect drove up within minutes.
The alleged shooter led police on a chase, which ended in a cul-de-sac.
Police blocked off the cul-de-sac with cars and a number of officers armed with drawn guns. The suspect's car was also boxed in by an armored truck and a secured sheriff's truck.
The suspect holed up in the car for around three hours before peacefully surrendering.
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Four children and two adults have been fatally shot, and a mother is fighting for her life after a family member opened fire inside a north Harris County home, investigators say. Now a standoff near the scene is underway, and the suspect threatening to kill himself.
The bodies were discovered at a home in the 700 block of Leaflet Lane near Interstate 45 and Cypresswood. According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, three children and two adults died at the scene, while a mother and a child were transported via LifeFlight to a hospital. That child has since died and the mother, though in critical condition, is now the lone survivor of the attack.
Harris County Pct. 4 deputies say the mother was shot in the head but managed to call 911 and tell them that a family member was the gunman. She told deputies he was going to a restaurant to kill another family member who works there.
Deputies intercepted the suspect and gave chase. The pursuit lasted only a few minutes and never seemed to reach high speeds. The chase ended in a cul-de-sac and there's currently a standoff underway. Residents in the area have been evacuated.
"They actually knocked on the door, my boyfriend answered. And he was like, 'Can y'all get out as quick as possible?'" witness Samantha Aytes said. "I was like pretty freaked out because nothing ever happens in spring. So I just wasn't expecting it at all."
The suspect has locked himself in the vehicle and authorities are trying to negotiate with him. Deputies say the suspect, who's in his mid 40s, has a gun to his head.
Back at the scene on Leaflet, neighbors say the family has lived here for some time.
"It's just a terrible thing. I don't know what could have happened. " neighbor Dale Collier said. "Just a bad deal, bad, bad deal. You wouldn't think something like that would happen in a neighborhood like this. It's real quiet, never anything going on."
