BOB SCHMIDT SHOWS YOU HOW TO ACCURATELY FRAME FOR AN INTERIOR DOOR SHOWING YOU HOW TO MEASURE A DOOR AND ALLOW FOR PROPER CLEARANCE WHILE FRAMING ALSO HOW TO DEAL WITH AN UNLEVEL FLOOR.probably the single most important part
of your framing is your door framing
00:08
proper door framing as far as installing the door go much easier
00:12
I will show you how to do that, Lets get to work.
00:20
now before you can frame for a door you have to understand door sizes,
00:24
this door in particular that we are going to be installing today is a
00:27
two six door.
00:29
does not mean twenty six inches it means 2ft 6 inches and that is a 30 inch door
00:34
in
00:34
you always frame two inches wider
00:38
than
00:38
the size of the door to allow for this
door jamb material
00:42
and to allow for shims for setting the
door
00:45
same holds true on the height a standard door is 6ft 8 in
00:49
you always frames six foot ten
00:52
along side of your opening for the door
00:54
you're always going to have two studs
00:57
the stud here that is 1 1/2 inch away from the opening
01:00
we call it the king stud
01:02
and it runs from the base plate
01:04
all the way up
01:07
to the bottom of your top plate
01:08
at the top
01:10
now this stud here
01:11
will call it the crippling comes
even with your opening and this is what you
01:15
you are going to attach your door to
01:17
and it runs from the bottom plate all
the way up to the bottom of your header
01:20
which is the top framing for the opening
01:23
now there's a reason why you always have
two studs alongside a door opening
01:27
its because
01:28
A) It has more strength for holding the
weight of the door
01:32
B)
01:33
if you nail these two studs together nice and flat on the face
01:37
It will also help keep them from twisting or bowing
01:40
and third reason is
01:42
is when you had your box, when you put
your door trim on here
01:45
It will hold your electrical box far enough away that a standard casing will fit.
01:50
if you're using a wider than standard
casing
01:53
you can always add a block to install your box on to
01:57
give you enough spacing for your trim. The
single most important thing you can do when
02:01
you're framing for your door
02:04
is make sure that this is plumb
02:06
hold the 4ft level about the center the opening
02:09
put it against the two side studs
02:11
and make sure that the bubble is as close to the dead center between those lines as you can
02:15
get
02:16
there's only a limited amount of space
that you are going to have here
02:20
to shim in behind the door if you have
this leaning too far one way or the
02:23
other
02:24
the door will not fit properly
02:26
once you're sure that your two sides are
plumb
02:29
you also have to make sure that your
header is level
02:32
now sometimes when you're building on a
basement floor and the floor is running downhill
02:38
one-side of your jamb may be kicked up higher than the other
02:41
and make sure that you make any
adjustments that you have to do to make
02:44
this level prior to hanging drywall. So
there you go
02:49
you got your width right you got your
height right you have your two side pieces
02:52
that are nice and flush with each other
that you nailed together strongly
02:56
you got a level top of plumb sides
You are ready to get some drywall on this frame
03:01
and this opening will be ready for a door. One
more thing i realized after watching
03:04
this video that we maybe you need to
know
03:06
this framing that we did for this wall
03:08
is for not bearing wall, in other words
03:12
you're going to have weight above here a
roof load or floor load you'd have to
03:16
consult an engineer to find out what size header you will need
03:21
prior
03:22
to building the wall
03:25
yea that that was pretty it, Owww
03:27
I forgot wait a second!
03:29
